Hydrotherapy is a modality of care in naturopathic medicine that generally involves the use of water, both hot and cold, for pain relief and treatment. The term encompasses a broad range of approaches and therapeutic methods that take advantage of the physical properties of water, such as temperature and pressure, to stimulate blood circulation and treat the symptoms of certain conditions.
Concerns that hydrotherapy can support:
- Circulation
- Mild depression
- Joint Pain/Arthritis
- Injuries to muscles or ligaments
- Headaches
- Insomnia
- Stress
At Bastyr University Clinic, we may recommend one or more hydrotherapy treatments, in conjunction with your physical medicine or naturopathic medicine plan of care, including:
- Constitutional hydrotherapy (use of hot and cold towels interchangeably to support circulation)
- Hubbard tub treatment using water (not offered at this time due to COVID protocols)
- Hubbard tub treatment using peat mud (not offered at this time due to COVID protocols)
Your care team may also recommend you self-administer hydrotherapy treatments at home, such as using intermittent hot towels and cold packs, hot/cold showers, and Epsom salt baths. Ask your patient service representative for more information about hydrotherapy at (858) 246-9730.
