For women looking for a long-term birth control method, Bastyr Center for Natural Health offers a new option that might be easier on your pocketbook.

Liletta is a new hormone-releasing intrauterine system, or IUS, that studies have shown to be 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy for up to three years.

“This is a great option for women in their late 30s or 40s who already have kids, or for younger women who want to wait a few years to get pregnant,” says Laurie Cullen, ND, who sees patients in Team Care at Bastyr Center. “This is for women who are wanting something very effective and are hoping to postpone pregnancy for a while.”

Although women can become pregnant immediately after removal of the Liletta, it is a popular choice for long-term use because of its longevity and ease of use compared with methods that must be taken daily or monthly.

Covered by Medicaid, Most Insurances

The cost of the Liletta, including its placement and removal, is covered by most insurance plans as well as Medicaid. Bastyr Center accepts Medicaid patients through the managed care programs Molina and Amerigroup. Read more about Bastyr Center’s insurance and billing.

Other hormone-releasing intrauterine systems available at Bastyr Center include Mirena and Skyla. Dr. Cullen notes that for women who prefer a hormone-free long-term option, the copper intrauterine device (IUD) ParaGard also is available.
