Oil massage is among the natural treatments in ayurvedic medicine.

Taking a multivitamin and a brisk walk around the park might sound like the perfect daily health regimen for some people, but for others it’s not so easy to know what diet, exercise and health care treatments work best to maintain a healthy body.

You can find that perfect balance with help from a new health care service offered at Bastyr Center for Natural Health: Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old medical tradition from India translated to “the science of life.”

“Ayurveda can help you understand your own strengths and weaknesses, and empower you to move in the direction of health and wellness,” says Dhaval Dhru, MD, chair of the Bastyr University Department of Ayurvedic Sciences. “Modern science is just trying to catch up.”

Dr. Dhru also will be supervising student clinicians at Bastyr Center when ayurvedic medicine Team Care shifts begin on September 29. To help introduce you to this new service, Bastyr Center is offering ayurveda appointments for $25 from October-November 2014.

What is Your “Constitution”?

Ayurvedic medicine is a complete time-tested system of medical therapies, combining nutritional counseling, herbal medicine, massage therapy and bodywork, internal cleansing and immune-system support.

“Each person has a unique constitution, or body type, in ayurvedic medicine,” Dr. Dhru says. Your first ayurveda appointment will last approximately 90 minutes, which gives your clinician time to determine your constitution and whether you are living in balance with that type.

“When we make improper choices in diet, lifestyle, environment or even relationships, we reach an imbalanced state,” Dr. Dhru says. But finding balance again through ayurveda could be as easy as changing your diet and exercise routine, or it could involve adding herbal supplements or teas, ayurvedic massage, sweat therapy and more.

“We want you to be in harmony with your environment, which will help you be healthier and reduce your risk of health-related issues,” Dr. Dhru says, adding that ayurveda also teaches patients how to continually modify and change their diet and lifestyle to maintain that healthy state.

Who Should Make an Appointment?

Like the other health care services available at Bastyr Center for Natural Health, ayurveda invites patients in all stages of health.

“It’s ideal for anybody who is interested in improving or maintaining their health, as well as for those struggling with chronic conditions,” Dr. Dhru says. Some of those chronic conditions include:

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Allergies
  • Weight-related issues
  • Digestive disorders
  • Chronic neuromuscular, neurodegenerative and immunological disorders

Payment is required at time of service. You may take advantage of multiple $25 visits during the promotion, but you may only schedule one appointment at a time. Rate is for a consultation only; additional services cost extra
